Keloids and hypertrophic scars

What are keloids and hypertrophic scars ?

Hypertrophic scars and keloids are benign skin lesions caused by excessive growth of fibrous tissue due to uncontrolled collagen synthesis and deposition. They are most commonly found in young people with dark skin. They occur after injuries, surgical incisions, burns or diseases such as acne, or they may be inherited.

Nowadays, their treatment is usually a combination between intrauterine infiltrations with steroids, cryotherapy, specialised topical preparations and special surgical techniques.
