Herpes zoster

 What is Herpes zoster ?

Herpes zoster is an infection caused by the virus that also causes chickenpox (varicella zoster virus, VZV).

Herpes zoster is due to the activation of the chickenpox virus that had infected humans in old age.

After the initial chickenpox infection is over, the VZV virus remains inactive without causing any symptoms.

Herpes zoster affects a specific dermatome (skin area) in which erythema with blisters is observed. Most often in the elderly there is sometimes intense pain.

It is necessary to be checked by a specialised dermatologist to decide on taking special antiviral drugs to avoid complications. Today there is a special vaccine to prevent the appearance of herpes zoster.
