Psoriasis

What Is Psoriasis ?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects about 1-3% of the population. It affects all ages, and occurs with equal frequency in men and women. In many patients, there is a family history of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, with an unknown exact cause. Its progress is characterized by chronic recurrent episodes of ups and downs. 3-6% of patients suffer from psoriatic arthritis.

Clinically its most common form (common plaque psoriasis), presents silvery scales on erythematous lesions. There may be itching in some cases. These plaques are typically located on the elbows, knees, and scalp, but they can also be extensive and occupy large areas of the body.

In addition, the disease can affect the fingernails and toenails.

Psoriasis is treated by the Dermatologist, step by step, depending on the case and based on the form of the disease, the extent of the infection, its severity, the patient’s response to older treatments and the needs and particularities of each patient.

There are local, systemic treatments and combinations of them.

Nowadays, we can ensure complete remission of psoriasis, as long as the patient applies the treatment.
